A child in a sweetie shop

My day could not have got off to a better start today.

Charisma in Midnight from Amy Butler's new Lark collection

After several conversations about my favourite fabrics with the owner of my local sewing shop, Singers in Bedford, he invited me in to join in a meeting with a rep from Coats.

Would I be free to come and drool over some gorgeous fabrics, and then help choose what to order? Why, YES PLEASE!

I wasn't quite sure how it would work out with having my youngest girl to accompany me, but, it was all fine. It turns out she is easily bribed with the offer of a chocolate digestive or two (thanks, Chris), and obligingly sat in her buggy just long enough for her Mummy to behave a bit like a child in a sweetie shop.

So, these are a few of our favourites that are now on order. Well, my favourites, to be honest - in fact, I am already day dreaming about the things I'd like to make. Mainly clothes for myself, I think. And possibly a bag or two. I do love a bag.

Sounding a bit too keen, I asked the rep how long until the order appeared in the shop. Two weeks. Perhaps a week.

Time to finish off any unfinished projects, ready for some guilt-free fabric shopping. Guilt free, I hear you say? Well, buying local is a good thing, isn't it? Supporting local independent shops and all that jazz.

To be honest, I'm still undecided on the whole buy local movement. I'm not an economist, and I just don't know or understand enough about it yet to come to a fixed position on it all.

I've had so many conversations with other crafty types, bemoaning the fact it is difficult to find some of the lovely fabrics they'd like to buy locally.

Blockprint Blossom in Amethyst from Joel Dewberry's Heirloom Collection
Today has made me realise that my local sewing shop is genuinely willing to listen to its customers. And that for me is exciting - not least because it saves me a thirty or forty minute car journey to John Lewis.

I hope you like these fabrics as much as I do. I hope they prove to be popular with other customers at my local sewing shop. Otherwise, I fear I'll never be invited back for another child in a sweetie shop experience and will just have to trot back and buy more fabrics to ease my guilt...
